My First Love

My love of gardening started when I was a toddler. I spent a lot of time at the home of my grandparents. The best memory I have is of their garden full of iris and lily of the valley plants. The irises are still a favorite because they are so elegant with so many different varieties. Lily of the valley has such a lovely scent and still brings back many warm memories of my childhood.

My love of flowers became cemented during kindergarten when Mr. White (the rose gardener at Ritter Park in Huntington, WV) started bringing rose bouquets to me while I was in class. The special feeling I felt cannot be described adequately because I grew up in a large family and don’t remember having anything that was just for me.

My two sisters and I shared everything. I wouldn’t trade my sisters for anything in the world because it was truly wonderful always having two built-in best friends. Family and flowers make everything better.

I hope you will fall in love with sea turtles too!

Dear friends,

The first time I saw a nest boil over was on a warm summer night on Oak Island in North Carolina. It was fascinating to watch the 108 tiny turtles climbing over each other to get out of the nest! They instinctively knew to head toward the ocean. It was a magical night, which I will never forget!

I have thoroughly enjoyed many educational conversations with the Oak Island sea turtle nest volunteers over the years. Sitting at the nests while hoping to see them hatch has quickly became one of my favorite things to do every year. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know.

Unfortunately, I found out that all of the sea turtles in the U.S. are considered endangered or threatened. It is widely thought that out of one thousand sea turtle eggs, only one hatchling will make it to adulthood. There are many things we can do to help. I hope you enjoy the following intriguing information and learn how you can be a part of helping to preserve these incredible reptiles!

Love,
Jean
